ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Magi Merlin grew up in Saint-Lazare, Canada. It’s a place that may sound unfamiliar to most, but rest assured it is a lot closer to home than you realize. A wet dream created by people like Nixon in the 70s, a place for white folks, by white folks. The suburbs are the epitome of “normal” unless of course, you replace white with Black, straight with Queer, that is when normalcy is challenged. This, amongst other subjects — such as the impact of capitalism on art, nepotism, and the duality of the relationship one has in taking pleasure to belong to those things while rejecting them all. That is what drives and inspires the creative universe behind Gone Girl – Merlin’s upcoming and most audacious effort to date.

Recently relocated to Toronto, Vancouver-born singer and producer Prado has been unapologetically brash and confident throughout her short but mighty career. On her celebrated 2021 debut, PRADO MONROE, she shed her Soundcloud skin to reveal a skilled rapper, singer, and beatmaker, boasting mind-boggling production quirks and a stage presence to match. Bordering on hyperpop with whiplash tempos, she blazes through cheerleader-style gang vocals, tropical guitar loops, psychedelic soundscapes, and NY drill-influenced wobbly bass without warning. Smashing expectations with a megastar’s presence, Prado already knows you love it.

Little Destroyer fill every room with as much energy, spit and spectacle as humanly possible. The agro alt-rock trio from Vancouver straddle the line between punk hedonism and pop indulgence, reminiscent of the volatile 00s vibe of The Kills and Yeah Yeah Yeahs but at home alongside modern contemporaries such as Dream Wife & Amyl And the Sniffers. On stage, frontwoman Allie Sheldan is an enigmatic shape shifter, at times mirroring the unbridled chaos of a 1970s Iggy Pop, while at other moments, like a blue light, introspective and vulnerable. Brothers Michael and Chris Weiss complete the band with huge beats and livewire guitar antics respectively, rounding out the sound and bringing the type of bond (and rhythm section) that only siblings can.

West Coast rapper Teon Gibbs is always pushing the boundaries of genre and innovation. Complex UK recently premiered his work and highlighted how he “hit on a fusion sound that has been sorely under-explored.” Each body of work has been more cutting edge than the last both visually and audibly. Looking to engage both senses, Gibbs has a powerful stage presence, a confident flow and the ability to create music with an infectious blend of hip-hop and R&B that keeps the listener engaged.

Sophia Eleftheria’s 2021 debut EP, progressions, offered a raw and emotional picture of a young artist progressing steadily from one stage of life to the next. Soundtracked by minimalist alt-R&B production, the 20-year-old newcomer’s agile and delicate tones are at the forefront of her craft, floating through jazzy vocal runs and subtle key changes. It would be easy to guess Eleftheria is from Toronto as the music she has released to date fits right in with the city’s popularized alt-R&B sound, complete with its laid-back and slowly-strummed guitar chords, highly impressive vocal runs, and emphasis on harmony that would make any OVO Sound member proud.
