Now let’s learn more about Abi and how she can help you get your music to radio and more!
How and when did you first fall in love with music?
When I was 9 years old, my father gave me an acoustic guitar and I started taking lessons. Later, I began to be more interested in the organ, so I also took lessons with a teacher in her house with her incredible piano.
What was your first industry gig?
Designing websites for artists. One of them was Marlene Favela 15 years ago during the Flash program boom.
How do you help clients have the best chance for success?
I recommend distribution lists that fit their goals, and suggest best practices to optimize release performance according to the market they want to reach.
Can you tell us what you consider when assessing a song for radio?
I step into the shoes of a music curator, analyzing whether or not that track has potential in the industry and if so, I identify the correct music format & genre(s). I also forecast the potential of the track in relation our charts and assess how it might fit into the target music market. Beyond radio, I also consider the song for our global music supervisors list which has professionals seeking music for the gaming industry, television, movies, media and much more.
How do you help a newer artist? Can you offer some advice?
I explain in great detail what you need for a professional promotional release and work with you to help you meet your goals.
As far as advice, the main things are to be patient, have a visual identity, stay active on social media, and get all of your music registered with PROs (ASCAP or BMI) for royalties, and of course, have a marketing plan! There is more to it, the music industry is quite complex, but our team is here to help.
In your opinion, why should artists promote their music with Play MPE?
To reach new audience segments and be considered by curators in radio, media, music supervision, and much more – who are actively seeking releases.
Should artists focus on their own market or promote further?
A bit of both. Breaking into other markets is an opportunity to learn where curators are receptive to your music and grow.
What are your top bands and artists of all time?
Black Eyed Peas, Cafe Tacvba and La Arrolladora Banda El Limón.
Which newer artists have you going – WOW?!
Sam Smith and Teddy Swims!
Who were your favorite artists growing up?
Timbiriche and La Onda Vaselina when I was younger, and then later Backstreet boys, Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Molotov, and Cafe Tacvba as a teenager.
Top 5 music genres on your playlist?
Regional Mexican, Reggaeton, Pop in English and Spanish, and HipHop.
Pick 5 artists from any time for your fantasy concert
Black Eyed Peas, Ricky Martin, Queen, The Beatles, and Christian Nodal.
Do you play any musical instruments or sing?
I used to sing and play the acoustic guitar, organ, and flute.
Do you have a secret talent that would surprise people?
Some time ago I took a voice over and dubbing course with masters like Mario Filio just to name one. I have a demo reel where I dub Barney’s voice in Spanish.
